NJR Accountability and Transparency Model

The National Joint Registry for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man (NJR) has reviewed its processes in how it monitors implant, hospital and surgeon performance as part of the development of a new NJR Accountability and Transparency Model. 

The new model ensures NJR audit data is being integrated across a regulatory and professional framework, with the NJR robustly supporting surgeons and hospitals to keep within safe performance limits. The review involved significant consultation during 2017 between the NJR, healthcare regulators, and the orthopaedic professional bodies and surgical societies. The processes which underpin the Model are now being actioned.

The NJR’s Accountability and Transparency Model: what’s new?

The NJR was established in 2002, it monitors the performance of implants, the effectiveness of different types of joint replacement surgery and provides evidence to improve clinical standards — all with an absolute focus on patient outcomes.  

Since inception, the NJR’s scrutiny has unmistakably led to increased patient safety with poorly performing devices removed from the market and has turned a spotlight on poor surgical practice.  However, it is important for a registry the size of the NJR to routinely review its processes and ensure it is continuing to best serve patients.

Collaboration: The NJR, regulators and the profession

Supported by NHS England, the NJR’s Accountability and Transparency Model is an initiative created in collaboration between the NJR, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), Care Quality Commission (CQC), NHS Improvement (NHSI), Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP), the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), specialist surgical orthopaedic societies, and the NJR’s contractors, Northgate Public Services Ltd and the University of Bristol.


The importance of data quality

The NJR monitors poor performance more accurately when all hospitals are submitting timely and accurate data. Quite simply, if the data is incomplete or incorrect, then false conclusions may be drawn from any analysis.
