Joint replacement statistics
Hip replacements have been performed in the UK since the 1960s and knee joint replacement procedures followed shortly afterwards. The implants and techniques have developed rapidly since then.
In England and Wales there are approximately 160,000 total hip and knee replacement procedures performed each year. Approximately the same number of hip and knee joints are replaced.
These procedures are carried out in around 400 hospitals. One third of these hospitals are managed by the independent sector and the remaining two thirds are NHS hospitals. Two thirds of the procedures are funded by the NHS.
StatsOnline shows how many hip and knee replacement procedures are submitted to the NJR each month by each hospital.
