The National Joint Registry (NJR) is the largest database of hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacement procedures in the world and presents an unparalleled opportunity for research. Our strategy is to make data widely available to the research community to further the understanding joint diseases and the determinants of outcome of these common procedures. The NJR is engaged in an active research programme and welcomes external requests that will maximise the research potential of this resource.
Research projects that wish to use NJR data are classified as external, independent, research projects that are supported by the NJR (NJR Supported Projects) or internal or collaborative projects (NJR Partnership Projects). All applications for a research project, external and internal, are managed by the NJR Research Sub-committee through a single portal of entry and management pathway.
If you are planning to submit a grant application that uses NJR data, an Expression of Interest (EoI) form for the project must be submitted to the NJR Research Sub-committee and an 'approval in principle’ response received, prior to submission of the grant application to the funding body. Information on existing projects can be found in the NJR research portfolio on this site .

Guidance notes for research applicants
In the first instance all applicants must submit an expression of interest about their research idea and study summary prior to submitting a full application for NJR data. This short EoI form asks you to establish the correct classification for the research study that is, whether it is an external project (NJR Supported Project) or an internal or collaborative project (NJR Partnership Project) research request.

2: Complete your Expression of Interest form for review
Please download, complete and submit the EoI form (below) and return to the NJR Research Officer firstname.lastname@example.org. The NJR Research Sub-committee will endeavour to respond to all requests within one month of receipt.
Following approval of an EoI, applicants will be invited to submit a full external or internal research request application. The relevant application form will accompany the invitation from the Research Sub-committee to submit a full application.

- Research requests may be submitted at any time, but we recommend that you submit as far in advance of the deadline as possible
- Applications will be accepted until 5pm on the day of the deadline to email@example.com
- Submissions received after the deadline will be deferred to the next period
- We aim to give written feedback to applicants within one month of the RSC meeting
- Should we require further clarification of the research request, we will be in touch to discuss, and may request your attendance at a future RSC meeting

Publication policy – researchers please note
Disseminating information on current research, presentations and publications is a priority for the NJR. Applicants in receipt of NJR data for research studies will be expected to provide regular reports and conform to the NJR's publication policy.
The recipient will provide a copy of any paper/abstract to NJR Research Sub-committee for review and comment at least one month before submitting for publication
or making public any information that has been derived utilising the NJR data set.
The recipient agrees to acknowledge the contribution made by the NJR in all publishable work arising from research on the data and will provide copies of such publications, presentations and abstracts to be placed on the NJR research website. Standard wording for such acknowledgement can be found in the guidance document above (‘Acknowledgment of the NJR’.)

Please use the definitions in the Health Research Authority (HRA) classification document to determine the category of your request to use the NJR data set: Defining Research
Please note that the NJR does not provide funding for research studies. However, the Gwen Fish Orthopaedic Trust has informed the NJR that it will consider applications for grants to support NJR research projects. Applicants will have to submit their proposal to the trustees for a full evaluation on a first come, first served basis.
