NJR Patient Network case study on surgery at a younger age published in ‘Hull Live’

We are pleased that one of our Patient Network members has recently had their case study, highlighting their lived experience.

Published by regional news outlet, Hull Live, the feature raises awareness of the everyday challenges faced by some patients in advance of any joint replacement surgery. It also highlights the impact that successful joint replacement can have on improved mobility, gaining independence and a return to increased quality of life.

The article shines a spotlight on those facing the prospect of joint replacement at a younger age. At 32, Kathryn underwent a hip replacement after years of living with pain. She shares how her condition affected her everyday life and how misconceptions around age can sometimes prevent younger patients from considering joint replacement as a positive treatment option. By sharing her experience, Kathryn hopes to encourage others in a similar situation to seek advice sooner, explore the treatment options available to them and feel confident in making informed choices about their health and quality of life.

Media coverage such as this helps to broaden public awareness of the work of National Joint Registry (NJR) and of our resources that enable patients to have informed conversations with their healthcare professionals and equip them with the knowledge to partake in shared decision-making in their consultations. The feature aligns with the work of the network to amplify patient perspectives and raise awareness of the challenges associated with musculoskeletal conditions, as well as the considerations involved in joint replacement surgery.

NJR Patient Network co-chair Rebecca Beesley said:

“Kathryn’s story is a powerful reminder that it is not only older people that are affected by joint problems. By sharing her experience, Kathryn is helping to challenge common misconceptions around the age of joint replacement, whilst also encouraging others to seek advice and explore treatment options that could significantly improve their quality of life.”

A key workstream of the NJR Patient Network is to enable patients’ voices to provide an important role in raising awareness, support informed decision-making and help others feel informed and supported in their joint replacement journey. We thank Kathryn for sharing her experiences and thereby potentially helping to support others who may be navigating a similar healthcare journey.
