NJR Surgeon and Hospital Outcomes Publication and re-issue of CLR/ACR reports

The National Joint Registry (NJR) will once again be publishing consultant surgeon and hospital level information about joint replacements on the NJR’s Surgeon and Hospital Profile website. We continue to work closely with lead specialty body, the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and other specialist orthopaedic societies, to agree the plan for publication and to ensure the publication of surgeon profiles and data is accurate and robust, for the benefit of patients and the public.

All consultant surgeons who have carried out at least one joint replacement procedure hip/knee/ankle/elbow/shoulder as consultant-in-charge in any hospital during the most recent financial year – 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024 – will be included for publication on 15 January 2025 at https://surgeonprofile.njrcentre.org.uk. 

All data available in the Clinician Feedback section of NJR Connect is up-to-date and we recommend that the ‘Activity’ report, under ‘My Data’ is the best place to check your case numbers. The data for the relevant period have been extracted and are set for this publication and cover procedures performed during the period 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2024, so please ensure that any other report that you are checking the data against covers the same time-period.

Please note that, as in the Consultant Level Reports, any hip hemiarthroplasty procedures that have been entered onto the registry since the introduction of MDSv8 in June 2023 are now included in the counts of primary hip replacement, however all trauma cases are excluded from the mortality rates reported, so mortality outcomes are not impacted by this change.

The consultants’ preview period will commence on 2 December 2024 and remain open until the end of the day on 2 January 2025. Consultants should review their clinical outcomes on NJR Connect – Data Services during this time-period. If a consultant finds any issues with their data within the preview period timeline (for example, procedure volumes are too high/too low/ or upper limb procedures are being displayed for a lower limb surgeon), they should email the NJR Service Desk at enquiries@njrcentre.org.uk with details of the issue.

Data anomalies raised will be reviewed and any decision with regard to publication of the data relayed back to the consultant. If the above action does not resolve the issue, the consultant should escalate this to their hospital Medical Director as soon as possible.

In case of serious concerns about data accuracy, any consultant can request their data be suppressed for publication. The deadline for any such requests is close of business on 2 January 2025.

Consultants should also add/update their profile information prior to publication, e.g. specialist areas of practice and any membership(s) of professional bodies by logging into NJR Connect – Data Services, hovering over surgeon name on the top right of the screen and clicking on ‘Edit profile’. From there, they can select the ‘Surgeon’ tab to update specialties and society memberships, and the ‘Person’ tab to upload a photo if they wish to. Please also note that if you are checking your data against your Consultant Level Report, that the initial publication of this report included an error that resulted in under-reporting of revision activity, and an updated report is currently due to be released on 17 December 2024. There will also be some adjustments made to the ACR reports which will be re-released on 6 December 2024. All changes that will be made in the re-release of these NJR reports can be found here.
