NHS Choices updated with latest National Joint Registry data on joint replacement surgery
On Tuesday 9 February, the NHS Choices website was updated with the latest data and statistics on joint replacement surgery. The data, collected and analysed by the National Joint Registry for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man (NJR), continues to enhance NHS England’s performance data on surgeon and hospital-level orthopaedic outcomes.
Since 2013, NHS England has carried out a consultant outcomes publication (COP) programme, which includes orthopaedics, publishing data at both hospital and individual consultant-level via NHS Choices and on the NJR’s dedicated Surgeon and Hospital Profile website at: www.njrsurgeonhospitalprofile.org.uk.
The COP programme, underpinned with data collected and analysed by the National Joint Registry’s data for England, seeks to develop each year to include additional quality measures and present surgeon-level information to patients and the public domain as part of the delivery of NHS England’s openness and transparency programme.
Additions and changes for the latest orthopaedic consultant outcomes publication profiles include:
- Inclusion of patient case-mix information covering gender, age, BMI, ASA 3+ and diagnosis other than osteoarthritis
- Surgeon-level NJR compliance rates for primary and revision procedures, based on NJR data submissions compared to Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data, subject to HES data release and data verification prior to publication

For orthopaedics, the COP programme continues to be developed in partnership with the key orthopaedic associations, including the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA). Please sign up to the NJR eBulletin (sign up here) to stay up to date with this initiative.
