How does the National Joint Registry's work benefit me? How can I become a part of the NJR's Regional Support network? Who are the working groups the NJR works with? We aim to answer all your questions whether it be in person at a conference, in our Annual Report and weekly reports or here on out website

Reminder of data entry requirements for the NJR

A recent review of NJR data entry has identified a number of specific NJR procedures where data entry is incomplete. It is important for surgeons to ensure that the appropriate NJR forms are completed for all eligible procedures. Complete and accurate data submission is essential to support patient safety, outcome monitoring and research.

Reoperations other than Revision (RO) form

The RO form was introduced in June 2023 to capture non-revision procedures involving joint replacements that were previously not routinely recorded within the  registry.

This form should be completed for the following procedures:

  • Closed or open reduction of dislocation
  • Fixation of periprosthetic fracture
  • Superficial or deep Debridement, Antibiotics and Implant Retention (DAIR)
  • Washout of haematoma
  • Joint Manipulation Under Anaesthesia (MUA), for example for a stiff knee
  • Soft tissue repair or procedure, such as ligament, capsule, or tendon repair
  • Excision of heterotopic bone
  • Excision of excess cement

Please ensure that these procedures are recorded using the relevant NJR form for each joint, even where no revision of implant components has taken place..

Shoulder PROMs Q1 form

The collection of pre-operative Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) is crucial in establishing a patient’s baseline pain, function, and mobility prior to surgery.

The NJR oversees the collection of Shoulder PROMs across all applicable shoulder procedures.

A new Q1 PROM questionnaire was introduced in February 2026 to separate the PROMs form from procedural data and  enable the Q1 PROMs to be collected during pre-assessment.

Where possible, hospitals are encouraged to collect the Q1 PROMs when patients consent for the data to be submitted to the NJR.

Megaprosthesis forms

The M form was introduced in January 2026 to support the collection for megaprothesis procedures. The correct form should be selected based on the patient’s implant history and the procedure being undertaken.

M1: Primary megaprosthesis in a native joint

M2: Revision of an existing megaprosthesis to another megaprosthesis

MS: Revision of a conventional joint replacement to a megaprosthesis

M forms should be completed for all appropriate procedures performed in all joints. If you have any questions regarding the appropriate form to complete, please email njr@njr.org.uk.

Total talus replacements

Total talus replacements are not currently captured under their own category on the registry. The A1 form should be used to record primary total talus replacement (TTR) and primary ankle replacement which includes a TTR and a tibial component. The A2 form should be used to record revision of a total ankle replacement to a TTR and tibial component and revision of a TTR to a TTR plus / minus tibial component.

For both forms the procedure type used should be prosthetic replacement not recorded elsewhere (eg hybrid).

Trauma procedures

The NJR continues to collect data on trauma procedures, including hip hemiarthroplasty (H1 form) and radial head replacement (E1). We encourage hospitals to ensure that appropriate systems are in place to capture these procedures.

For any queries about which NJR data collection form to use, please contact the NJR Service Desk 0800 0150167 / enquiries@njrcentre.org.uk, who will be able to advise.
